A new study by a team led by the New Zealand Medical Association found that the use of Viagra had a higher risk of death compared with non-users, particularly for those with diabetes.
The study, by Dr David Niedermayer and Dr David Niedermayer, of the New Zealand Medical Association, was published in theNew Zealand Medical Journal, examined the risk of death from heart failure in patients who were taking Viagra for erectile dysfunction. The study was funded by Pfizer Inc.

Dr Niedermayer said he believed that the study would lead to more studies in men with diabetes.
“The findings are encouraging,” he said.
“The fact is, the study was designed to be a follow-up, rather than a placebo-controlled trial.”
“The findings do not prove that Viagra has the potential to lower blood pressure in diabetes, but it can have a major impact on the overall health of the people, and we encourage patients to seek advice from their healthcare providers and follow up with their doctor if they have heart failure, or any other underlying medical conditions,” he added.
Dr Niedermayer said patients who were prescribed the drug for erectile dysfunction “should be aware that they need to make a few lifestyle changes to manage their condition and improve their overall well-being.”
“Viagra and other drugs that are used to treat erectile dysfunction can have negative side effects that can impact the quality of life for the patients,” he said.
“There are also other things that can affect how well it works for you in general, and you should always talk to your doctor before you start taking any new drugs.”

He said Viagra was not recommended for anyone with diabetes.

In a separate study published inJournal of Medical Oncology, a team led by Dr David Niedermayer, of the New Zealand Medical Association, found that the use of Viagra was associated with a higher risk of death among patients with diabetes, including heart failure.
